Strength in Education

At Island Fitness we value ongoing education and take pride in having a team of trainers who work hard to continuously improve their skill sets. During the shutdown, our trainers have been making great use of their time by participating in continuing education courses to update their knowledge.
Read what Diane Peterson and Gavin DeWitt have been up to.

Gavin:
This spring I began the 3rd Level of Ortho-Kinetics Training. This builds on the positional testing and isometric techniques I learned to improve range of motion in Level 2. Currently I am learning to isolate, test, and train individual muscles and then also learning how to re-educate these muscles to work efficiently in general movement patterns. I’m excited to be able to bring these new techniques to Island Fitness to help improve the health of our members.

Diane:
I may not be getting any home repair or gardening done. But I am increasing my education to serve our members better!

The HIIT Advantage-This course offered me tools for creating personal and group High Intensity Interval Training, based on the science behind maximal effort and rest. I learned optimal ways that clients can get their strength training incorporated into anaerobic cardio sessions. We can balance and mix Maximal Intervals, Mixed Intervals, and Hard, Harder, Hardest Intervals. Focus can be on lower body, upper body, core, or mixed in one session. And guess what? You do NOT have to jump. You can, but it is not compulsory. I plan to use this information for developing personalized hiking, trekking, and backpacking programs.

StairMaster HIIT Instructor- In this course I learned ways to create circuits for small group training utilizing TABATA and fartlek techniques like HIIT Advantage. Clients rotate between a variety of cardio equipment, and by the time they have gone through one full round, they will have targeted the entire body. YES, we can do this through online training! It would just be your household and circuits we create using what you have at home. This is also a great way to utilize those home spin bikes some of you have invested in.

NASM Cardio Training for Sports Performance – This course focused on ways to work smarter not harder, and how training methods can be varied for specific sports and activities. It’s not about strolling on the treadmill watching TV on a daily basis. Nor is it about busting it at max intensity randomly, occasionally, or even daily. Different activities require different amounts of aerobic, anaerobic, and cross training. Should this be incorporated into your strength program or separated? How does it change as you get closer to your race, backpacking trip, sport season?

I am available to set up Cardio Coaching Sessions to plan this out. It starts with setting goals, cardio & skills assessment, and looking at your endgame compared to your starting point. This would entail a couple of meetings to start, then monthly or bimonthly meetings to set progressions. Online coaching sessions are perfect for this format.

NASM Cardio for Fitness- This course focused on cardio for weight loss and cardio for busting out of plateaus. I am also available for Cardio Coaching Sessions so you can WORK SMARTER NOT HARDER. We’ll look at what you are doing, what worked in the past, what injuries may be slowing you down, and what your next step should be. This will entail a couple of meetings to start, then monthly meetings to set progressions. Online coaching sessions are perfect for this format!
