Beating the Food Challenge When You Are ‘Staying Home, Staying Healthy’

This is one of my challenges right now: being home with less structured time with all my FOOD!

I thought maybe some of you may have a similar challenge? Here are some tips that help me. I would LOVE to know what helps you!

  • Stick to structured meal and snack times. Try to avoid eating outside of these times unless you are truly hungry.

  • Be aware of emotional eating. If you find yourself snacking in between meals/snack times…check in with yourself. You may be stressed, bored, anxious, tired, sad or mad (you get the idea).

  • Before noshing on some chips: pause, take a few deep and focused breaths and ask yourself if you are truly hungry or what is going on.

  • If you live with others, aim to have at least one meal a day together.

    • screen free

    • appreciation of the meal and preparation that went into it

    • include light-hearted, open-ended questions as part of the dinner time discussion

  • Recruit everyone (especially kids) to help in the kitchen. With prepping and cooking them meal, setting and serving the meal and cleaning up! I have a 16 and 18 year old who don’t typically cook more than a random scrambled egg.

  • Since we all have been home they are each responsible for cooking two dinners a week. This has actually been so great for us all and is giving them much more confidence in the kitchen (and me a break!!)

  • Set some healthy eating goals and reach out for some accountability and check ins to stay on track!

Keep sight of the big picture and remember it’s about progress not perfection! Reach out for support and more ideas!!
